Achieving ISEB Qualifications

Course Need

This month we look at the resolution of a question raised by a member of staff of one of our clients. It's the sort of question that anyone could be facing and this article shows how you too can answer it.

Many organisations, including the client in question, have invested heavily in training their IS staff. The organisation wants to equip staff for their jobs, but the staff themselves are increasingly aware of the benefits of a recognised qualification. In the IS field the obvious choice is the ISEB certificates and diplomas.

So, the question raised was 'how can I use the training I have received in order to gain ISEB qualifications?' In this case the question was directed towards gaining three of the certificates in Business System Development.

The client checked whether this was an isolated enquiry and found that a number of staff were thinking the same thing. The requirement was then passed on to us to suggest how we could assist staff to gain these qualifications.

The Solution

This client had taken a number of IS courses from us over many years. Our first step was to produce a mapping between the content of these courses and the syllabi of the relevant ISEB certificates. This showed the client where staff should already have the skills to sit the examinations and where further training would be needed.

Both we and the client were sensitive to the desire not to spend more than was necessary to satisfy the need. We put forward various approaches but recommended a blend of refresher and new materials which we felt would be adequate to let staff tackle the three ISEB certificates they were seeking.

The client assessed the costs and potential benefits of our proposal and agreed to proceed with a set of courses, one of completely new material and two, one day refreshers.

Course Content

We already offer full training and examinations for the certificates required by these staff so our solution was based on the following courses:

• Business Organisation
• Business Analysis Essentials
• Requirements Engineering

Previous training had not really addressed the first of these but it had covered the majority of the latter two. The solution we offered involved delivering the two day course to cover Business Organisation with refresher days to cover BAE and RE. Included in the refresher days was any required content that was not part of our prior training.

In total the programme comprised just four days of material with the examinations following each of the three segments.

Outcome

The courses achieved their objectives with success for all bar one candidate in the examinations. The client found this a cost-effective solution to the problem and the participants gained the qualifications they wanted.
